Capricorn Caves launches Capricorn Caves Geonature Conservation Foundation

Not For Profit

The Capricorn Caves Geonature Conservation Foundation is a newly established not‑for‑profit organisation created to protect, research, and interpret the extraordinary natural and scientific values of Capricorn Caves.

Recent palaeontological discoveries have revealed that the caves contain one of the richest and most accessible fossil deposits in Australia, alongside threatened species including the ghost bat and the endangered cave fern.

These findings highlight the national significance of the site and the need for a dedicated entity to manage its scientific and environmental future.

Operating alongside Capricorn Caverns Pty Ltd, the Foundation focuses on four core pillars: scientific research, conservation and habitat protection, education and community outreach, and enhanced visitor engagement.

Its role includes supporting palaeontological excavation and analysis, restoring sensitive ecosystems, safeguarding threatened species, and developing curriculum‑aligned programs for schools and universities.

The Foundation will also help bring science to life for the public through new interpretive displays, interactive learning experiences, and future technology‑enabled tours.

As a public company limited by guarantee with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status, the Foundation can attract grants, donations, sponsorships, and research partnerships.

This structure makes it possible to expand scientific programs and conservation projects beyond what a commercial tourism operator can deliver alone.

It also ensures long‑term stewardship of the caves’ natural values, including the careful management of fossil heritage in accordance with national and international best‑practice standards.

By strengthening partnerships with researchers, universities, Traditional Owners, conservation organisations, and the broader community, the Foundation aims to position Capricorn Caves as a leading centre for natural sciences in Central Queensland.

Its work will support new opportunities for palaeo‑tourism, hands‑on science education, and community engagement that benefit both the region and future generations.

The establishment of the Foundation represents a significant milestone in the long‑term vision for Capricorn Caves ensuring that our unique environment, fossils, and living ecosystems are protected, studied, and celebrated well into the future.
