Events Flaura & Fauna Things to Do

When the Queensland summer heat becomes unbearable, finding a cool and quiet escape can feel like a challenge. But at Capricorn Caves, we’ve got the perfect solution for locals and travellers looking to beat the heat and enjoy nature at its finest. Summer at Capricorn Caves offers unique experiences you won’t want to miss. Here’s why it’s the optimal time for a visit:

Escape the Heat in the Cool Caves

The natural limestone caves provide a cool retreat from the scorching summer temperatures. No matter how high the mercury climbs outside, the caves maintain a refreshing, stable temperature of around 24°C year-round. It’s the ideal way to enjoy an adventure while staying comfortable and out of the sun!

Bats in Season

Summer is the season when our bat population is most active. You can witness these fascinating creatures as they make their home in the caves, giving you a rare opportunity to learn about their habits and role in the local ecosystem. Bats bring an added layer of excitement to your visit, especially for those with an interest in wildlife.

Lush Rainforest After the Rain

After the summer rains, the rainforest surrounding Capricorn Caves comes alive with lush greenery and vibrant foliage. The fresh, earthy scent of the rejuvenated forest adds to the overall experience. It’s the perfect time for a peaceful stroll before or after your tour, immersing yourself in the beauty of nature at its peak.

Butterflies at the Cave Entrances

With the summer rains and flourishing greenery, butterflies flock to the cave entrances, adding a magical touch to your visit! These colourful creatures dance through the air, creating a picturesque scene you’ll want to capture. Their presence adds a delicate beauty that’s best appreciated during the warmer months.

A Quieter, More Relaxed Experience

For locals, visiting outside of peak tourist season offers a more peaceful experience. With fewer crowds in January and February, you can enjoy a more intimate tour and take in the wonders of the caves without the usual hustle and bustle. It’s an ideal time for locals to connect with this natural gem in their own backyard.

Experience Beyond the Cathedral

Make the most of your summer visit with our Beyond the Cathedral Tour. This 90-minute guided experience, held daily at 11am from December 13th to January 8th 2026, takes you deeper into our most impressive chambers before leading you to Belfry Cave for the spectacular Summer Solstice light display. If the weather doesn’t allow for solstice viewing, the tour transforms into a hands-on Fossil Dig, offering a unique citizen-science adventure.

The Summer Adventures program held during the school holidays is bursting with exciting activities for all ages. Join our Toad Bust Nights with CQU, try a Rock & Rope abseiling adventure, enjoy wildlife encounters with Capricorn Wildlife Connections, or let teens take on the challenge of our Teen Adrenalin Day.
