The first of our interviews is with Amber Countryman, one of the esteemed tour guides here at Capricorn Caves. With her extensive knowledge, passion for exploration, and commitment to providing unforgettable experiences, Amber is an integral part of the Capricorn Caves team.
What do you do at Capricorn Caves and how did you end up working here?
My name is Amber, I’m one of the Tour Guides at Capricorn Caves. I first fell in love with this place as a high school work experience student. Several years ago, I got to a point in my life where I needed to spend more time in the natural environment. I knew where I needed to go… so here I am, it felt like coming home.
What do you love most about working at Capricorn Caves?
What I love most about working at Capricorn Caves is that I get to spend my days here. I get to wander through and explore… there are still things I am yet to see and witness. There is always a chance finding an unusual fungus appearing in the forest or an animal worthy of halting the tour so we can all enjoy it’s presence. The colours and textures of the rock mesmerise me. I get to turn up each day with anticipation, not knowing the experience I am about to have. It’s not work… it’s a pleasure.
Which is your favourite cave tour and why?
Honestly, I can’t decide which is my favourite tour. Visitors can choose their experience when they come to the Caves and each tour has a completely different offering, none more or less valuable than the others. You can stand in awe, you can appreciate, you can learn, you can get high, get through, get dirty, whichever you choose. I love that we offer different experiences.
Tell us about a particularly memorable experience you’ve had working at Capricorn Caves.
Eyes full of tears, fist bumps, hugs and handshakes…. when visitors REALLY connect and value the experience of the amazing place they have just been encompassed by, those moments mean the most to me. I also value the experience of supporting visitors to push their boundaries and leave to live a new version of life as a changed person.
What do you think sets Capricorn Caves apart from other tourist attractions?
Capricorn Caves is a very unique cave system compared to most other caves… you’ll find out why when you get here. We also celebrate and take care of the natural environment, the beauty and significance of this place that has been existing here for so many millions of years, we are all visitors here.
What advice would you give to someone who is visiting Capricorn Caves for the first time?
Just get here!! I have conversations with people who have been driving past on the highway for 40 years, they finally decide to drop in and are always astounded at what they see and a little regretful they left it so long.
And finally, if you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
If I could choose any superpower, it would be to heal body and mind of Homo sapiens. Flying would be pretty awesome too!
